Ireland’s Only Blackcurrant & Horse Breeding Farm Tour & Tasting - Wexford

Hosted by

Des

Meet Des

Des is a 3rd generation farmer growing blackcurrants since 1955 on his family Blackcurrant and Stud Farm in the south east corner of Ireland’s Ancient East. That’s an awful lot of accumulated expertise and perfection in the art of growing blackcurrants, so you can appreciate, he really knows his stuff! Des tells a personal family story that is embedded in the locality, how it has influenced relationships and become part of local culture.

About The Experience

On arrival to the farm you will meet Des and his two golden retrievers Molly and Tessa, don’t worry they are very friendly. As you walk with Des through the blackcurrant plantations you will hear how these humble Irish super berries became interwoven in Wexford’s cultural history. Learn about biodiverse growing methods and the unique soil of Wexford’s Sloblands, that gives the berries a taste and flavour like no other, anywhere in the world. You will see the hedgehog piles, the bird boxes and wildlife habitats that all contribute to sustainable production. Young horses and breeding mares graze the pasture land and if you are lucky enough you will see the new season baby foals. You can even give a carrot to Tom, Sooty and Beauty, the farm’s resident donkeys. On returning to the historic farmyard and home dating back to 1629, you will savour the taste and enjoy a delicious blackcurrant cocktail (non-alcoholic) made from the berries grown and harvested on the farm.

What Else Do You Need To Know

This is a farm walk so come prepared for all weathers.

The ground is mainly flat, and walking pace won’t be too fast, but be prepared to cover 2 miles across grassland.

The tour is not ideal for children under 6 to 8 years due to the walking distance. As it’s a working farm, children must be accompanied by an adult, at all time.
